Glenn W. Bailey
Mr. Bailey was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, and the founder and former chairman of the Fortune 500 Bairnco Corporation.
After serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to the states to earn his MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business after having received his Engineering degree from the University of Wisconsin. In 1962 he joined the staff of Harold Geneen at ITT and served as president of what became, at the time, ITT’s most profitable manufacturing division.
In 1967, Mr. Bailey used his life savings to purchase Keene Packaging Associates, a small New Jersey manufacturing company, and after a reorganization, the company emerged as Keene Corporation, with sales booming to over $200 million by 1976.
In 1981 Bailey established Bairnco Corporation, a holding company whose purpose was to build investor value by acquiring promising companies, building their management and financial skills, and eventually spinning them off as independent public companies. It was Mr. Bailey’s core belief that a company’s growth and success came from the participation of its employees, not only in the work to be done but also in the rewards to be reaped.
Mr. Bailey referred to his employees as his teammates. He insisted on providing real growth opportunities within his companies and was revered by employees at every level for his honesty, integrity, and strong belief in the latent talent inherent in every person.
Mr. Bailey believed deeply in the importance of supporting STEM and Medical Research. Our Foundation will continue Glenn’s legacy of supporting medical and environmental research initiatives, providing STEM learning opportunities, and encouraging entrepreneurship.
